Therapeutic riding has been around much longer than most of us are aware of. It has been documented by the ancient Greeks that horses were used not only for transportation but also for therapeutic purposes. Orbasis of Lydia acknowledged this fact as early as 600 BC. The first study of the value of riding as therapy was reported in 1875 by the French physician Cassaign. He concluded that it was helpful in the treatment of certain kinds of neurological disorders by improving posture, balance and joint movement, as well as psychological improvements.

In the 1950’s England recognized the therapeutic value of riding for people with various disabilities and started riding therapy for injured soldiers at the Oxford Hospital during World War I. The British Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) was founded in 1969 with the eager support of the Royal Family.
